Essay on Dashain and Tihar

Essay on Dashain / Durga puja

we celebrate many festivals such as dashain, tihar ,holi, chhat, etc. Among them dashain is the greatest festival of Nepal and hindus but the people who follow other religion except hindus are also found to be enjoying by celebrating this festival. It is normally celebrated in Ashwin or Kartik.
Dashain is celebrated as the greatest national festival in our country, Nepal. This festival is believed to be the symbol of victory of virtue over sin according to the mythology. It has been celebrated since lord Ramchandra got victory over demon king Ravan. It is also believed that Goddess Durga got victory over demon Mahisasur in dashain.
This festival is also called 'Bada Dashain'. It generally falls in September according to the lunar calendar. It is generally celebrated for 15 days but all days are not equally important. The first day is called 'Ghatasthapana'. On this day people sow the seed of barely, maize, wheat, to use seedlings of these seeds during this festival. The seedling are called 'Jamara'. We use jamara like flowers. Building, and temples are cleaned and purified during this festival. The seventh day is called 'phulpati'. On this day onward goddess durga is especially worshiped. The eighth day and ninth day is 'Asthami' and 'Mahanavami' respectively. On this day animals such as goats, sheep, cocks, ducks etc are sacrificed and offered to the goddess durga. The tenth day is called vijay Dashami. It is very important day of this festival. On this day all the junior family members and relatives get red mark, we call tika, on the forehead. The juniors are heartily blessed believing goddess durga as a witness. The fifteenth day is called 'Kojagrata Purnima'. It is the last day.
People take various types of foods and dishes. Especially children seems very happy in this festival because it is highly enjoyable for them. The children are provided new and attractive clothes. They enjoy various types of games. All the government and non-government organizations are closed during this festivals. All the family members get together. All the family members, relatives, and society member can share their feelings and experience from which brotherhood, friendship, cooperation etc get strength.
Dashain should be celebrated properly. We should not spend more money unnecessarily. I think that sacrificing and offering the innocent birds and animals to the goddess durga is not good work or deed. I think goddess durga will  be satisfied if we kill our evil desires and misbehaviour.

Essay on Tihar or Deepwali

We have many festivals. Among them Tihar or deepawali is also one of the greatest festivals of Hindus. Tihar falls after Dashain in the end of October. During this festivals birds and animals are worshipped. It is also known as the festivals of lights. Every houses and temples of Hindus are properly cleaned and purified.
Deepawali is also known as tihar. This festivals is generally celebrated for five days, so it is also known as yampanchak. During this festivals some animals, birds, god and goddess are worshipped. On the first day crows are worshiped by offering food to them. On second day dogs are worshipped. On the third day cow and goddess Laxmi are worshipped. Goddess Laxmi is believed to be the goddess of wealth. People worship oxen on the forth day. Fifth day is also known as bhaitika. On this day sister offer tika on the forehead of the brothers. They also offer garlands of the flowers on the neck of brother. The brothers are also provided with sweets, fruits and other food items. In return brother tika, gift and money to the sister. They enjoy delicious food sitting together. Before the sisters worship their brothers, they worship Yamraj, the lord king of death. It is believed that the life span of the brothers gets longer when they worship the lord king of death.
As this is the festivals of lights and flowers, various kinds of candles, lights and traditional Dyos are lit in order to illuminate the whole buildings of the people. During this festivals houses, buildings and temples are beautifully decorated. During this festivals people and childrens move door to door by dancing and singing some traditional and cultural songs called Deusi and Bhailo. These songs are melodiously chanted and sung in groups.
This festivals strength good relations between brother and sister. They can exchange their feelings, sorrows and happiness. They can understand each other. I think this festival is better than dashain because in this festivals people worship birds and animals whereas in Dashain people killed the birds and animals. This festivals teaches us the lesson of humanity. So like this festivals very much.
